BOÖTES VOID

Boötes void (also known as The Great Nothing) is a massive, approximately spherical volume of space nearly 150 million light-years in radius. It is one of the largest voids, accounting for 0.27% of the observable Universe. The Boötes void contains very few galaxies. One of them is the barred spiral galaxy MCG+01-02-01, one of the most isolated in the Universe. This metaludio uses spectral data from this galaxy from which musical prime matter is generated and later modelled to construct the piece. The whole piece is played in the lowest register of the piano and features several inside-the-piano extended techniques: a strip of Blu-Tack® over the strings in last octave of the instrument to modify their timbre; single, double, and triple harmonics; and a neodymium bar magnet to create new sounds.
